Mr. Joe Kennedy is in his 25th year of working for Liberty-Benton Local Schools as a custodian. He grew up on Benton Ridge and he enjoys working with the students and staff. He is looking forward to vacations in New York City and Washington D.C. He also enjoys going out to eat with family and friends.
The Liberty-Benton Athletic Department would like to thank Doug Hiegel Insurance Agency and Quality Printing and Graphics for their recent addition to our high school gymnasium. They have added a new sign to our gym that includes all of the Blanchard Valley Conference schools. We appreciate their generous donation. We also would like to thank our maintenance department for installing the new signs. The winter sports season is just around the corner; we look forward to seeing all of our fans soon at our athletic events! GO EAGLES!!
Students in the elementary and middle school paid homage to our nation’s veterans during a very special K-8 Veteran’s Day assembly in the middle school gym. The Hancock County Memorial Squad opened the ceremony with the presentation of the colors. Fifth graders Kaden Boutwell, Juliana McGrain, and Brady Mabe led us all in the Pledge of Allegiance. Superintendent Jim Kanable opened the ceremony with a welcome to all of our veterans. Eighth graders Mattie Vermilya, Emma Otley, Jordan Roeder, and Amanda Tremains led the audience in singing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The seventh and eighth grade band and middle school choir performed “America the Beautiful.”
The assembly included special videos and music as we paused to reflect and appreciate our veterans. Mr. Otley spoke on the meaning of Veteran’s Day before our keynote speaker, Mr. Charles Smith (United States Army), addressed our students and faculty. Mr. Horstman shared the history of Taps, and eighth grader Tommy Brown closed the ceremony by playing Taps as the Hancock County Memorial Squad retired the colors. Mr. Burkett finished the assembly with closing remarks.
About forty Liberty-Benton veterans, and their spouses (70), attended the ceremony with our student body as our esteemed guests. Thank you veterans for your service to all of us! Thank you to retired teacher, Dianne Norris, for providing piano accompaniment for our special music. Also, thank you to retired secretary, Mary Garcia, for decorating our gym.
Since 1929, National Junior Honor Society has been recognizing the highest achieving students in grades 6–9. Students from Liberty-Benton High School attended the 28th Annual Northwest Ohio Student Leadership Conference. The conference was held on the campus of Defiance College on October 21, 2015. Students from 46 area high schools were invited to participate.
The Scholastic Book Fair will begin Monday, November 30 and last through Friday, December 4 in the library. A special preview is set for Tuesday, November 24 to view the books, check AR levels, get ideas for Christmas presents, etc. Wish lists will be available.
During this time the library will be open for students to check out books that are not blocked by the book fair. Classes can check out books, shop, read and use their iPads in the library during their library time. If students forget their money on library day, they may come another day at their convenience.
The book fair will also be open in the evenings on Wednesday, December 2 and Thursday, December 3 from 5:30-8 p.m.
The Scholastic Book Fair will close at noon on Friday, December 4. Any classes scheduled after this time will need to find another time during the week to shop the fair.
On Friday, at the end of the school day, teachers may come to select books for classrooms. The dollar amount will be announced then.
Families can also shop online at www.scholastic.com/fair from November 25 through December 8. Enter the school zip code and start shopping! The books will be delivered to school individually packaged. Great for grandparents and other out-of-town shoppers!
A little history…..
Coats for Christmas of Hancock County originated from the vision of City Dry Cleaning owner, Paul Kramer. In 1987, Mr. Kramer developed and launched a service project to provide a warm coat to those in need, regardless of financial circumstances. Mr. Kramer conceived the idea of an organized collection of gently used coats, donating his company’s services to clean those coats and distribution of the freshly cleaned coats to those in need with out financial qualification. In 1997, the Hancock Leadership Alumni Association assumed responsibility for organizing and marketing the collection and distribution effort. Mr. Kramer continues to be actively involved in the campaign by providing his business services to clean all of the coats that are donated. The youth of ENGAGE play a very important supporting role in the service project by collecting new hats and mittens to distribute as well.
In the spirit of giving…
On Friday, November 20, decorated donation boxes will be at each school building for coat, hats, and mitten collection. The collection time period for this year will be November 20th through December 4th. We wish each and every one of you Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!
Once again, our sixth grade outdoor education trip was a great success! 115 sixth graders traveled to Jackson, Michigan to the YMCA Storer Camp for five days and experienced classes and activities that promoted team and character building, critical thinking skills, and conflict resolution through active participation. Some of the classes that students attended are horseback riding, Michigan County, rock wall climbing, reptiles, the Underground Railroad, and pioneer pastimes. Students got to sleep in rustic cabins, experience family style meals, and take part in fun activities such as square dancing and skit night. The YMCA staff members pride themselves on promoting the values of care, honesty, respect, and responsibility, which, combined with everything else, makes this outdoor educational trip a very meaningful experience for our students.
